Anger Management Counselling

I have often heard clients say their anger seems to bubble up out of nowhere; they feel they go from 0-10 in a matter of seconds.

In fact, before an outburst occurs, there are physical cues that, if attended to, can let you know it may be coming and give you a chance to remove yourself from the situation and calm yourself down before you erupt. Physical cues include, but are not limited to: trembling, increased heart rate, jaw clenching and sweating.

Consider what lies beneath the feeling of anger. Triggers can include a sense of shame, fear, nervousness, feeling an expectation is unmet, or hurt.

Gauging and expressing the true culprit can help de-escalate an angry outburst and keep the conversation on a less volatile, more productive level.

Anger can initially stem from early trauma, a learned response, a culmination of build up of small frustrations, or the desire to hide anger under the guise of “I can handle it”.

If anger is affecting your social life and relationships; if you are constantly feeling irritable or worse; if you become aggressive or constantly blame others for your own reactiveness, you might consider seeking the help of a counsellor who can help you modulate and express yourself in a more effective manner.

It is important to remind yourself that although It Is Not the Anger That Will Help Fix the Problem, anger can be a motivator to change things that are not working for us.

Learning to manage anger in a more effective, less detrimental way can enhance quality of life for you as well as for those around you.
