" Creating Possibilities and Potential "

What to Expect in Your Session

People seek counselling for a wide variety of reasons. Very few of us sail through life without contending with transitions and adversity and the subsequent stress, anxiety or grief that accompanies those challenges. You may be wanting support for a current issue or something more long-standing.

Here is what to expect in the initial session as well as those to follow:

Your First Session

Once you have scheduled an appointment and walked through the office door, it is not uncommon for people to feel apprehensive with the idea of opening-up to a counsellor; it takes courage to begin the process followed by time to build trust and rapport. This therapeutic alliance is one of the most important aspects in the process of change. I encourage you to be direct and open about your immediate concerns in addition to long-term goals. It is useful to communicate what you find helpful during our time together. On-going feedback is part and parcel of the process.

Our initial session primarily involves gathering information about your current concerns, noting some general personal history as well as looking at your specific goals for counselling by considering the (big!) question: What do you hope to get out of therapy?

Of course, you are also welcome to ask me any questions you may have regarding my training, experience and therapy style.

Methods I Use

I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach to change. Aside from ‘talk therapy’, I may incorporate a number of modalities such as: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Family of Origin work, Mindfulness, or role play, to name of few. Some clients dive in quickly and speak openly about their fears and concerns while others hold back or feel uncomfortable sharing. Time for silence and reflection during a session is also invaluable. Rest assured, your preferred pace will be respected.

How Many Sessions are Best?

In terms of how long you may wish to continue, that is a personal decision. Depending on the severity of your challenges, I usually recommend scheduling therapy sessions on a weekly basis until you have found some relief. This gradually tapers down as you begin to feel your resiliency growing. The duration of sessions is up to you. Generally, clients come to counselling anywhere from 3-20 sessions. Some clients will choose to schedule a check-in session as they deem beneficial.

My Hope for You

Ultimately, I want you to feel hopeful, renewed, optimistic and empowered, both during our time together and long after counselling has been completed.
